Overview
Step beyond the cruise port and into the ancient world of the Maya on an immersive guided journey to the remarkable Chacchoben Mayan Ruins, hidden among the lush tropical jungle of Quintana Roo.
Combining fascinating history, Mayan culture, nature, and comfortable transportation, this excursion offers an unforgettable opportunity to discover one of the Mexican Caribbean’s most intriguing archaeological sites.
Your experience begins just outside the Costa Maya Cruise Port, where you will meet your professional local guide. After a warm welcome and a brief introduction to the day ahead, you will board a comfortable, air-conditioned vehicle and begin your journey inland.
As you leave the coast behind, enjoy the changing scenery of southern Mexico as you travel through small communities and beautiful tropical landscapes. Along the way, your guide will share insights into the region, local traditions, wildlife, and the ancient Mayan civilisation that once flourished here, bringing the history of the area to life before you even reach the ruins.
Upon arrival at the Chacchoben Archaeological Zone, there will be a short preparation stop where you can use the facilities, organise your belongings, and receive important information before beginning your exploration.
The highlight of your excursion is a guided walk through the ancient ruins. Accompanied by your knowledgeable local guide, you will follow shaded jungle pathways leading to impressive ceremonial plazas, temples, pyramids, and other sacred structures dating back more than a thousand years.
As you explore, discover fascinating stories about the Maya, including their traditions, ceremonies, architecture, daily life, and relationship with the natural world. Your guide will explain the significance of the principal structures and the role they played within this remarkable ancient settlement.
The setting makes the experience even more memorable. Surrounded by dense tropical vegetation, the ruins emerge from the jungle to create an atmosphere of discovery and adventure. Keep an eye out for native wildlife, including colourful tropical birds, butterflies, and iguanas, which can often be seen throughout the area.
There will be plenty of opportunities to pause, take photographs, and appreciate the peaceful surroundings before continuing your exploration.
Following the guided visit, enjoy some free time to take additional photographs, browse the souvenir shop, or purchase refreshments before returning to Costa Maya.
Your comfortable vehicle will then take you back towards the cruise port, giving you the opportunity to relax and enjoy the scenery while your guide shares some final insights about the region and its fascinating Mayan heritage.
You will arrive back near the Costa Maya Cruise Port with time to return conveniently to your ship or continue exploring the port area.
