If a sense of history and an appreciation of beauty are on your list of holiday experiences, then a walking tour of the city of Split is a must do. This is a city steeped in history and rich in culture with an atmosphere all its own.
First on your list of places to see is the Old Town. This area is built on and around the spectacular Roman Palace erected by the Roman Emperor Diocletian. The emperor was born in Salona, today known as Solin, in the 4th century. The walking tour starts with a visit to the cellars of the Palace which you will be impressed to find are still very well preserved. The cellars offer an interesting insight into how the life in the Palace was organized.
From here, your walking tour takes you to the Cathedral of St. Duje, named after the patron saint of the city of Split. Interestingly, the cathedral is built on the remains of an ancient shrine and is supposed to be the oldest in the world. You can also visit the charming Temple of Jupiter from here.
Your walking tour gives you lots of opportunities to enjoy the historic ambience of Split. Along the way, your guide will also point out other sites of interest including the Golden Gate, the Silver Gate and Peristyle Square.
On completion of the walking tour, you will have time to visit the thriving and vibrant open market before strolling back to the ship.
