Overview
Your guide welcomes you ashore, board your transport and get ready to depart Ketchikan. Fourteen beautifully colored totem poles will await you just 15 minutes from downtown, at what was originally the site of a traditional fishing camp at the edge of the Tongass Narrows. A short walk through the woods will take you to the famous totem poles recovered from an overgrown forest and repaired or duplicated by skilled carvers using handmade tools. A community house onsite (also called a clan house) was added to the National Register of Historic Places back in 1970. Every step of the way your guide will familiarize you with the historical significance of the totem poles and the botanical examples of North Pacific coast greens that flourish here.
After your exploration of the Totem Bight State Historical Park you will head over to the secluded Harriet Hunt Lake in the Tongass National Forest where you'll board a 37- foot, 15-passenger canoe which is fast, stable, and easy to maneuver. You will paddle under the direction of an experienced guide, scan the shore for wildlife, and learn about the history of the Ketchikan area. The lake, part of a lush rain forest, is ideal for canoeing and is surrounded by the Tongass, the largest national forest in the United States.
Once you've built up an appetite, we'll stop ashore for a native-style delicious snack, including smoked salmon, clam chowder, rolls with wild berry jam, and beverages. Your knowledgeable guide will highlight the flora and fauna of the rainforest before you paddle back to the canoe dock and you re-board your transportation for your return to your cruise ship pier.
