Messina is considered the gateway to Sicily, as it is the first city reached from mainland Italy when crossing the Strait of Messina. Its historic city centre is home to remarkable artistic and architectural treasures, beginning with the stunning Duomo di Messina.
The Cathedral is the town’s main attraction, famous for its bell tower featuring the largest astronomical clock in the world. Every day, visitors and locals gather to admire the spectacular show as golden statues on the façade come to life to the moving notes of Schubert’s Ave Maria. In the same square stands the magnificent Fontana di Orione, considered one of the most beautiful 16th-century fountains and one of the few monuments to survive the devastating 1908 earthquake.
