Overview
Discover the authentic side of Barcelona in Sants, a neighborhood where traditional Catalan life, local food culture, and a strong community spirit have survived the city’s transformation into a global hotspot.
Often overlooked by visitors passing through on their way to Barcelona’s main train station, Sants offers a glimpse into the city’s untouristed soul.
On this food tour, we’ll explore a neighborhood filled with historic bodegas, vermuterias, family-run restaurants, bakeries, food shops, and innovative new eateries.
Along the way, we’ll taste beloved local dishes, seasonal specialties, handmade sweets, and vermut with tapas while meeting the places and traditions that have shaped everyday life in Sants.
Our day begins with breakfast at the recently restored Mercat de Sants, a neighborhood institution since 1913. From there, we’ll wander through the streets, stopping at old-school food shops, traditional bars, bakeries, chocolate shops, and restaurants to sample the flavors that make this part of Barcelona so distinctive.
Sants’ character is deeply connected to its industrial past. Once an important center of Barcelona’s textile industry, the neighborhood still bears traces of its working-class heritage in its historic factories, chimneys, and streets. Many former industrial spaces have since been transformed into vibrant community projects, cultural centers, creative spaces, urban farms, and even microbreweries.
We’ll finish at one of Sants’ most remarkable community-led projects: a vast 19th-century textile factory brought back to life as a bustling cultural center. Over a drink and more local bites, we’ll learn about the neighborhood’s history of community organizing and discover what makes Sants such a special part of Barcelona.
This is a chance to step off the well-worn tourist path without leaving the heart of the city, a food-filled journey through the traditions, people, and places that give Sants its unmistakable character.
