Overview
In many Spanish cities, a bodega is a neighborhood corner store or bar with, if you’re lucky, a wine cellar and a small kitchen serving riffs on traditional Spanish food. In Barcelona, bodegas are all of these things and more: they are the beating heart of their barrios, where neighbors gather for a glass of wine, a bite to eat, and plenty of good-natured banter.
On this tour, we’ll follow Barcelona’s urban wine route, eating and drinking our way through some of the city’s most iconic bodegas, wine shops, and neighborhood restaurants. We begin outside one of the city’s most beautiful century-old markets, El Mercat de Sant Antoni, in the Eixample district. Here, we’ll discover the ingredients that define the menus of Barcelona’s classic bodegas, from vibrant vegetables and artisanal charcuterie to pickles, olives, and both cured and fresh fish.
From the market, we’ll explore remnants of the old city walls before stopping at one of the area’s most emblematic bodegas for a glass of cava, Catalonia’s celebrated sparkling wine. We’ll then make our way into the Raval, on the southwestern edge of Barcelona’s historic Old City, to discover a selection of traditional bodegas, each with its own character and personality, yet all deeply connected to wine, old-school tapas, and the communities they serve.
Along the way, we’ll taste wines poured straight from the barrel and enjoy a properly served vermouth. We’ll also explore the Mediterranean traditions of preserving food, sampling cured meats, salted fish, and marinated seafood, time-honored techniques that remain alive and have been reimagined in today’s bodegas. No bodega experience would be complete without hearty, slow-cooked meat stews, the kind of soulful dishes that capture the essence of traditional urban cuisine.
Our journey eventually brings us back to L’Eixample for a curated tasting of some of Catalonia’s most essential wines, accompanied by a few local sweet and liquid surprises to round out the experience.
There is enough food to make this a long, well-lubricated lunch and enough wine to call it an extended happy hour. More than anything, though, this is an invitation into the unique culture of the Barcelona bodega and into the vibrant barrios that keep this beloved tradition alive.
