Overview
The city of Cartagena is steeped in history and this tour is the perfect way to explore ancient ruins, religious architecture, and the modern buildings that now line the streets.
Your first stop will be the Punic Wall. The wall dates from the 3rd Century BC and is the first defensive wall of its kind found in Cartagena. The wall was the site of the Punic War and is built from sandstone from local quarries and has a height of 3 meters.
Your next stop will be the port area and surrounding architecture. In 1728, Cartagena became the capital of the Spanish Navy's Maritime Department and the city was heavily fortified with the construction of a modern castle and a huge arsenal. The port has several areas of interest within the Maritime sector but also incorporates a vast amount of modern architecture and monuments which bring the port right up to date.
You will then move on to the Roman Theatre. The theatre was built between 5 and 1 BC by the grandsons of Augustus Caesar. The theatre has many areas of interest and is a fine example of Roman architecture. This is a very famous landmark in Cartagena and one that the Spanish are very proud of as it is one of only a handful of Roman Theaters remaining and is in fantastic condition.
To complete the tour, your guide will take you on a wonderful walking tour through the pedestrian streets of the historic center. Your guide will narrate about the ways in which architecture in Cartagena has changed to allow the city to grow and become the beautiful city we see today.
