Overview
A short walk from our cruise pier, you will meet your driver guide and your small group.
Settle in for this fully guided van tour and discover the Furnas Valley. A fully charged camera and comfortable shoes are a must, as your tour takes you to the beautiful regions of São Miguel.
Your journey takes you along the south coast of the island, eventually leading to the north for a stop at the Santa Iria viewpoint - expect cliffs and farmland views.
From here you will stop and enjoy a visit at the Gorreana Tea Plantation. You will have time to take a walk through the tea fields, discover the factory and enjoy a cup of the islands green or black tea.
From there, you’ll descend into the Furnas Valley, you may have read about the active geothermal field, now you get to experience this. Discover the volcanic steam , bubbling mud pots in the hot spring area of Lagoa das Furnas.
You will see the local tradition of cooking the Cozido das Furnas, this is method a slowly cooking meat and vegetable stew, buried underground and the volcanic heat cooks this. It really is fascinating!
Leaving the geothermal field, you will have time to lunch in the village of Furnas. You will taste the famous Cozido or if you prefer, choose other regional specialties.
After lunch time, you will visit the Terra Nostra Botanical Garden, a wonderful introduction to the islands exotic plants. From there you will have time for an optional thermal bath experience. The waters are rich in minerals and very relaxing and a really enjoyable experience should you choose to do this.
From here, you will board your transport for your return drive you to Portas do Mar, at the end of your tour in time for your ships departure.
Throughout the day, your local guide will share insights about the island from its rich history, to volcanic tales and local traditions, perfect for this small group tour.
