Cruising the Mexican Pacific Coast: what to expect

The Mexican Pacific Coast cruise route — often called the Mexican Riviera — runs from the resort-lined bays of Cabo San Lucas and Puerto Vallarta to the quieter colonial ports of Manzanillo and Huatulco. Along the way, the Pacific delivers world-class whale watching, world-class tequila, and some of the most dramatic cliff and jungle scenery in the hemisphere.

Venture Ashore's Mexican Pacific shore excursions are designed by specialists who know which whale-watching boats actually find whales in Baja, where the best street-food spots are in Mazatlán's Zona Dorada, and how to fit an authentic mezcal tasting into a six-hour port call. Every cruise tour runs in small groups — so you spend less time waiting and more time experiencing.

Every excursion includes direct ship transfers, is priced up to 50% below cruise line rates, and is backed by our Back to Ship Guarantee — because a long tequila lunch should never mean missing your ship.

When to sail

The best time to cruise the Mexican Pacific Coast

Mexican Pacific Coast's cruise season runs May through September, with distinct advantages in each month. Here's what to expect and when to book.

November – April

Prime season for Mexican Pacific Coast cruising — warm, sunny, and dry along the entire Riviera route. Baja California's grey whale watching peaks December through March, when mothers and calves fill the lagoons of Magdalena Bay and San Ignacio in one of nature's great annual spectacles.

December – February

Peak whale season on the Mexican Pacific: grey whales, humpbacks, and blue whales are all present along the Baja Peninsula. This is also the most comfortable time to explore Acapulco, Ixtapa, and Huatulco before the pre-Easter heat builds inland. One of the best cruise excursion windows of the year.

May – October

The rainy season brings lush green landscapes, emptier beaches, and noticeably lower cruise tour prices. Some rain falls most afternoons but mornings are typically clear and ideal for excursions. Hurricane risk exists on the Pacific coast June through October, though this side is generally less affected than the Caribbean.

Book Early

Most travelers book their Mexican Pacific Coast excursions 2–4 months before sailing.

Availability is widest that far out, and narrows first on the most popular small-group departures — helicopter glacier landings, whale watching and dog sled camp visits. Sailing sooner? Plenty of tours are still open, and the surest way to know is to check your own sailing date.

Iconic Mexican Pacific Coast

Signature Mexican Pacific Coast experiences

A short list of the experiences that make a cruise here unforgettable — most available across multiple ports.

Grey Whale Watching in Baja (Cabo / La Paz)

From January through March, grey whale mothers and calves gather in Baja California's warm lagoons in one of nature's greatest annual migrations. Venture Ashore coordinates small-group panga boat tours from Cabo San Lucas and La Paz — close-encounter wildlife experiences that put you within metres of these extraordinary animals.

Puerto Vallarta Jungle Canopy & Zip-Line Tour

Puerto Vallarta's Sierra Madre foothills rise dramatically from the Bay of Banderas, and our zip-line and jungle hiking combination takes small groups through tropical dry forest canopy with stunning views across the bay to your ship. One of Mexico's most popular cruise excursions — and significantly cheaper than the cruise line equivalent.

Mazatlán Colonial Quarter & Mercado Walk

Mazatlán's historic centro — 19th-century cathedral, the restored Angela Peralta Theatre, and the labyrinthine Mercado Central — is one of the most underappreciated colonial cities on the Pacific coast. Venture Ashore's walking excursion is led by a local historian and ends with a tostada and cold cerveza at a waterfront cantina.

Tequila Distillery & Agave Field Tour (from Puerto Vallarta)

Puerto Vallarta sits in the heart of Jalisco — the Mexican state that gave the world tequila — and within reach of family-owned distilleries producing award-winning spirits from the blue agave fields of the surrounding highlands. Venture Ashore's Puerto Vallarta tequila excursion includes an agave field walk, a guided distillery tour covering the full production process, and a joven-to-añejo tasting flight. Rounded off with a traditional Mexican lunch, it is the definitive Jalisco shore excursion.

Panama Canal Miraflores Locks & Casco Viejo Walk

From Panama City's Fuerte Amador cruise terminal, the Miraflores Locks — where ships are lifted and lowered between the Pacific and Atlantic — are accessible in under 30 minutes. Venture Ashore's Panama Canal excursion combines the Miraflores visitor centre viewing platform (timed to watch a ship transit live) with a walking tour of Casco Viejo, Panama's UNESCO-listed colonial old town of baroque churches and colourful balconies. One of the most iconic engineering and history experiences on any cruise itinerary.

Common questions

Mexican Pacific Coast cruise & shore excursion FAQs

Hawaii uses the US Dollar — it is a U.S. state. Credit cards are widely accepted across all Hawaiian islands. Most Venture Ashore excursions are fully pre-paid; local cash is mainly useful for tipping guides and personal shopping.

Hawaii is a U.S. state, so U.S. citizens do not need a passport to go ashore. International visitors will need the same documentation they used to enter the United States. Most Hawaiian shore excursions require no additional documentation beyond what you needed to board your cruise.

If your cruise ship skips a Hawaiian island call for any reason — weather, mechanical issue, or itinerary change — Venture Ashore will refund your excursion booking in full. No forms, no hassle. This guarantee applies to every Hawaii shore excursion booked through us and makes booking well in advance entirely risk-free.

Top Mexican Pacific cruise excursions include grey whale watching in Baja from Cabo or La Paz (December–March), a Puerto Vallarta jungle zip-line and canopy tour, a Mazatlán colonial quarter walking tour, a tequila distillery and agave field visit, and the Acapulco cliff divers combined with a Pacific bay cruise. Venture Ashore offers all of these as small-group experiences with pier transfers.

November through April is the prime season — warm, dry, and spectacular for whale watching. December through March is peak grey whale season in Baja. The summer months (May–October) bring the rainy season and lower prices, with some hurricane risk — though the Pacific side is generally less exposed than the Caribbean coast.

Yes — and it is one of the great wildlife encounters in all of cruising. From January through March, grey whale mothers and calves congregate in the lagoons of Baja California. Venture Ashore's whale-watching shore excursions from Cabo San Lucas and La Paz use small panga boats that can approach the whales closely and safely — an experience that large tour boats simply cannot replicate.

Yes — up to 50% less in most cases. Our Mexican Pacific shore excursions include expert local guides, small groups, pier pick-up and drop-off, and our Back to Ship Guarantee — at a price that significantly undercuts what your ship charges for comparable tours.

Cabo San Lucas offers some of the most dramatic Pacific scenery in Mexico — the famous Arch of El Arco, clear-water snorkelling, whale watching (in season), and water sports of all kinds. Venture Ashore's Cabo excursions range from a grey whale panga tour to a snorkel and beach combo, all with direct cruise pier transfers.

Yes — Puerto Vallarta is one of the safest and most tourist-friendly ports on the Mexican Pacific Coast. The Zona Romántica old town, the Malecón waterfront, and the Sierra Madre foothills are all well-established tourist areas. Venture Ashore's Puerto Vallarta excursions operate with vetted local partners and small groups — we have an excellent safety track record in the port.

Mexican Peso is the official currency, though USD is widely accepted in tourist areas across all major Mexican Pacific ports — Cabo, Puerto Vallarta, Mazatlán, and Manzanillo. Most Venture Ashore excursions are fully pre-paid, so local currency is mainly needed for personal shopping and tips.
