Cruising Alaska: what to expect

Alaska is one of the world's greatest cruise destinations — tidewater glaciers calving into steel-grey bays, humpback whales breaching off the bow, and a compressed May–September season that keeps the experience intimate and wildlife-rich. Most itineraries sail the Inside Passage, calling at Juneau, Skagway, Ketchikan, and Sitka before returning through the Gulf of Alaska to Seward or Whittier.

Alaska itineraries typically begin or end in Vancouver — one of the great port cities of the Pacific, with the Capilano Suspension Bridge, Grouse Mountain, and the Sea to Sky corridor all within easy reach of the cruise terminal. Many itineraries also call at Victoria, British Columbia — home to the world-famous Butchart Gardens, Orca whale-watching by Zodiac in the Strait of Juan de Fuca, and a beautifully preserved Edwardian waterfront.

Venture Ashore's Alaska shore excursions are built for travellers who want to go deeper into the wilderness than a large ship-sold group can reach: a small-group glacier hike on the Mendenhall Icefield, a dedicated whale-watching charter out of Auke Bay, or the legendary White Pass railway from Skagway — run in groups well below the cruise line standard. Alaska is one of the most popular shore excursion regions in the world, and the most sought-after tours sell out months in advance — we recommend booking as early as possible.

Every Alaska cruise excursion is up to 50% less than ship-sold rates, includes direct pier transfers, and is protected by our Back to Ship Guarantee — because Alaskan wildlife operates on its own schedule, and we make sure you never have to choose between watching a humpback breach and catching your ship.

When to sail

The best time to cruise Alaska

Alaska's cruise season runs May through September, with distinct advantages in each month. Here's what to expect and when to book.

May

Cooler, drier, and beautifully uncrowded — May is Alaska's underrated sweet spot. Glacier ice is at its thickest, wildlife is stirring as animals emerge from winter, and shoulder-season prices make it the best value month in the Alaska cruise year. Wildflowers bloom across the Inside Passage and bears are visible on the salmon streams.

June – August

Peak Alaska season: warmest temperatures, best wildlife activity, and maximum daylight. Humpback whales concentrate in Frederick Sound and Chatham Strait in large numbers, orca sightings are frequent, and the salmon runs begin in July. The most popular shore excursion period — book well ahead, particularly for helicopter glacier landings and flightseeing.

September

Alaska's secret season. The crowds thin dramatically after Labor Day, the forests turn gold and copper, salmon runs are in full flow, and the honey-warm light on the glaciers is spectacular for photography. Prices soften significantly, and bear sightings near spawning streams are exceptional. One of the finest months to cruise Alaska.

Book Early

Most travelers book their Alaska excursions 6–9 months before sailing.

Availability is widest that far out, and narrows first on the most popular small-group departures — helicopter glacier landings, whale watching and dog sled camp visits. Sailing sooner? Plenty of tours are still open, and the surest way to know is to check your own sailing date.

Iconic Alaska

Signature Alaska experiences

A short list of the experiences that make a cruise here unforgettable — most available across multiple ports.

Mendenhall Glacier Hike & Nugget Falls (Juneau)

Mendenhall Glacier sits 13 miles from downtown Juneau — accessible by small-group transfer, then explorable on foot to within metres of the glacier face. Venture Ashore's Juneau glacier excursion includes a walk to Nugget Falls and lakeside wildlife watching. One of Alaska's most requested shore excursions, run in truly small groups.

White Pass & Yukon Route Railway (Skagway)

Skagway's White Pass & Yukon Route railway climbs 3,000 feet through mountain passes to the Canadian border, past the ghosts of the Klondike Gold Rush. It's one of the great narrow-gauge railways on earth.

Humpback Whale & Wildlife Charter (Juneau)

A dedicated whale-watching boat charter out of Auke Bay puts you among Juneau's resident humpbacks and orcas in a vessel designed for the purpose — not a large sightseeing boat carrying 200 passengers. Groups average 25 travelers on our small, well appointed and fast boats;; experienced marine naturalists on board explain every sighting. One of Alaska cruising's defining experiences.

Misty Fjords Flightseeing by Floatplane (Ketchikan)

Ketchikan's Misty Fjords National Monument — 3,000 square miles of granite walls, ancient forests, and waterfall-streaked cliffs — is only accessible by floatplane or boat. Venture Ashore's small-group Misty Fjords flightseeing is widely regarded as the single most spectacular shore excursion in Southeast Alaska. Groups of six; incredible photography.

Sitka Wilderness, Russian Legacy & Wildlife Shoreline Tour

Sitka is Alaska's most historically layered port — the former capital of Russian America, with an onion-domed Russian Orthodox cathedral, Tlingit totem poles in the national historical park, and sea otters floating in the kelp beds of the sound. Venture Ashore's Sitka shore excursion is a small-group scenic wildlife and culture drive that covers the key landmarks and searches the rugged shorelines for abundant coastal wildlife — bald eagles, sea otters, and harbour seals — with an expert local guide who has spent years reading Sitka's wild and human history. A beautifully compact port day at prices up to 50% below ship-sold equivalents.

Capilano Suspension Bridge & Grouse Mountain, Vancouver

Vancouver's North Shore is home to two of the Pacific Northwest's most spectacular natural landmarks — the Capilano Suspension Bridge, suspended 70 metres above the Capilano River gorge in old-growth temperate rainforest, and Grouse Mountain, reached by aerial tramway for views across the city, the Burrard Inlet, and the Strait of Georgia on clear days. Venture Ashore's Vancouver shore excursion — available as both a pre-cruise and post-cruise tour with hotel and airport transfers — is the ideal way to explore Canada's most visited city before or after your Alaska voyage. Capilano and Grouse together make for one of the finest city-plus-nature days on the entire Pacific Coast itinerary.

Butchart Gardens & Victoria Waterfront Tour

Victoria's Butchart Gardens — 55 acres of immaculate sunken gardens, Italian terraces, Japanese garden, and rose garden in perpetual bloom — is one of the most visited attractions in Canada and one of the most photographed gardens on earth. Venture Ashore's Victoria shore excursion pairs a guided Butchart Gardens visit with a city orientation through Victoria's Edwardian Inner Harbour, past the ivy-covered Empress Hotel, the British Columbia Parliament Buildings, and the Inner Harbour's float plane terminal. Private transfers available from the cruise pier. For wildlife lovers, Venture Ashore also offers Victoria's Orca Whale Search by Zodiac — a high-speed hunt for Orcas, humpbacks, and porpoises in the Strait of Juan de Fuca, with purpose-built Zodiac vessels and experienced marine guides.

Alaska cruise & shore excursion FAQs

US Dollar in all American ports (Bar Harbor, Portland, Boston, Newport). Canadian Dollar in all Canadian ports (Halifax, Quebec City, Saint John, Sydney). Credit cards are widely accepted across all ports. Most Venture Ashore excursions are fully pre-paid, so local currency is primarily for personal shopping and gratuities.

Autumn fog and weather delays are a reality on the New England and Canada run. Venture Ashore's Don't Port, Don't Pay Guarantee means that if your ship skips any port for any reason, you receive a full refund automatically. No forms, no waiting. It's one of the most valuable protections in fall foliage cruising.

Yes — many of our New England and Canada cruise excursions are ideally suited for senior travellers. The Quebec City walking tour, the Halifax waterfront, and the Acadia scenic drive are all accessible with minimal strenuous activity. Whale watches involve boarding a boat but are generally very comfortable. Physical requirements are noted on each individual tour listing.

Alaska's top cruise excursions include a Mendenhall Glacier hike from Juneau, the White Pass & Yukon Route railway from Skagway, a dedicated humpback whale-watching charter from Juneau, Misty Fjords flightseeing by floatplane from Ketchikan, and the Sitka Raptor Centre combined with a sea otter wildlife cruise. Venture Ashore offers all of these as small-group Alaska shore excursions.

The Alaska cruise season runs May through September. May is the uncrowded, great-value month with thick glacier ice and active wildlife. June through August is peak season — the warmest temperatures, best wildlife activity, and longest daylight hours. September is Alaska's secret season: crowds thin, prices soften, the forests turn gold, and bear sightings near spawning streams are exceptional. Regardless of month, Alaska is one of the world's most in-demand shore excursion destinations — popular tours including glacier hikes, whale-watching charters, helicopter tours, and the White Pass railway sell out months before the cruise season. Book your Alaska excursions as early as you possibly can.

Yes — and it is one of the defining experiences of Alaskan cruising. From Juneau, Mendenhall Glacier is 13 miles from the cruise pier and accessible by small-group transfer. Venture Ashore's Juneau glacier excursion gets you to the lake edge and the viewpoint platforms within metres of the glacier face — a very different experience from viewing it from a distance on a bus tour.

Yes — up to 50% less in most cases. Alaska shore excursions are among the most expensive in the industry when purchased on the ship. Venture Ashore's small-group alternatives — particularly glacier hikes, whale-watching charters, and flightseeing — deliver the same or better experience at a significantly lower price, plus our Back to Ship Guarantee.

The White Pass & Yukon Route is one of the world's great narrow-gauge railways, climbing 3,000 feet from Skagway through dramatic mountain passes to the Canadian border — past glaciers, gorges, and the ghost towns of the Klondike Gold Rush. Venture Ashore reserves dedicated carriages for its small groups, separate from the large cruise-line contingents on the same train.

Nothing in wildlife is ever guaranteed, but Alaska's Inside Passage — particularly around Juneau, Sitka, and Frederick Sound — offers some of the highest humpback whale sighting rates of any cruise destination on earth. Venture Ashore's dedicated whale-watch charters use experienced marine naturalists and vessels purpose-built for the task. The success rate on our Juneau whale-watch charters is exceptionally high.

Layers are essential — even in July, Alaska's weather can change rapidly. Pack a waterproof outer layer, warm mid-layer, comfortable waterproof footwear, sunglasses, and a hat. For glacier hikes, trail shoes or hiking boots are recommended. Insect repellent is useful in wooded areas in summer. Venture Ashore's excursion listings note any specific gear requirements for individual tours.

Alaska is a U.S. state and uses the US Dollar. Credit cards are widely accepted in all cruise ports. Most Venture Ashore Alaska shore excursions are fully pre-paid; local cash is mainly needed for personal shopping in port and gratuities for guides and drivers.

Yes — many of our Alaska cruise excursions are suitable for travellers with varying fitness levels. The White Pass railway, the whale-watching charter, the Sitka cultural tour, and the Misty Fjords flightseeing are all accessible with minimal physical exertion. The Mendenhall Glacier hike involves some uneven terrain. Fitness requirements are clearly noted on each individual tour listing.

Alaska is the market where small-group size matters most. On a Venture Ashore whale-watch charter, you're with 16–20 people in a purpose-built vessel. On a ship-sold whale watch, you may be with 80–200. The difference in intimacy, flexibility, and wildlife proximity is dramatic. Add our Back to Ship Guarantee, Don't Port, Don't Pay protection, and prices up to 50% lower — and the choice is clear.

As early as possible — ideally the moment your Alaska cruise is confirmed. Alaska is consistently one of the most in-demand shore excursion destinations in the world, and the most sought-after experiences — Mendenhall Glacier hikes, Juneau whale-watching charters, Misty Fjords flightseeing, helicopter glacier landings, and the White Pass railway — sell out months before the cruise season opens. Unlike cruise line excursions, Venture Ashore tours have capped group sizes (typically 16–20 people), which makes early availability even more limited. Booking with a deposit secures your place without full payment upfront. Don't wait until you're on the ship — by then, the best Alaska shore excursions are almost always gone.
