Overview
Begin your sightseeing about 40 minutes outside of Reykjavik at the Thingvellir National Park. This UNESCO World Heritage Site is so named as it is a cultural, historical, and geological gem. The Icelandic Althing, an open-air assembly representing the whole of Iceland, was established here in 930 AD and continued to meet until 1798.
Over two weeks a year, the assembly set laws - seen as a covenant between free men - and settled disputes. But your experience will be different as you walk through the geological fault known as Almannagja to that location where that assembly was held. Taking advantage of the geology of the area will enhance your day as well as demonstrate the result of Icelandic fresh air in your lungs.
Excitement is building as you power along the highway. Your stop at Gullfoss waterfall, which is considered by so many as one of the most beautiful in Iceland, will be memorable. Designation as one of the most magnificent of Iceland's waterfalls will be best understood once you are there as waterfalls seem to be everywhere - but they are not created equal by any means!
The last of the Golden Circle is a stop at Haukadalur Valley in the Geothermal Area. Here you will learn why Iceland has benefitted from the earth directly as it has been using geothermal energy for thousands of years. By simply using the power derived from the Earth's internal heat, hot water is the least expensive commodity in the country. This may be best understood while watching the spouting geyser Strokkur eject a giant plume of steam in conveniently spaced intervals of about 5 minutes apart. The entire area is a thermal field of hot springs, bubbling pools, and spattering steam vents, visible as you walk towards the big geyser.
Though in actuality this tour could be called the Mossy Green Triangle based on the route and the highlights, the Golden Circle seems to suit it best and has made this route famous. You will arrive back in Reykjavik early in the evening, giving you plenty of time to explore the downtown area, with its museums, cafes, and shops, before dinner.
