Overview
The port of Cartagena, in the southeast center of Spain and on the coast of the Mediterranean Sea, has been prized since Carthaginian times. Thanks to its strategic position on the Murcia Coast, it has been inhabited by several cultures which have left their mark on its artistic heritage. The port itself is rich in ancient and maritime history. The town is walled, the harbor is defended by forts, and Roman ruins are scattered throughout.
Your introduction to Cartagena will include the Santuario de la Fuensanta, a 30-minute ride inland to the village of Murcia. This shrine to the Virgin of Fuensanta has lots of history attached to it and your guide will inform you as you tour the area. The Murcia Historical Centre, including the Cathedral, the Bishops Palace, and Belluga Square will follow, another short ride away.
After hearing the background of the area, you will return to Cartagena to see the Panoramic Elevator and the Civil War Air Raid Shelter Museum, which is fascinating.
We will make sure you also visit Torres Park, with its Castle of la Concepcion, the oldest in the city (XIV century). Here, you'll also find the Plaza de Toros (Bullring), under whose arena the remains of the legendary Roman Amphitheater can be found.
Before returning to the cruise ship pier, you'll enjoy some free time in the shopping area for souvenirs of the city.
