Overview
Essaouira, formerly known as Mogador, is a serene fortified city on Morocco’s Atlantic coast with a rich and diverse history dating back to prehistoric times. Archaeological discoveries have unearthed artifacts as old as the 7th century BC, showcasing the city’s ancient roots.
Over the centuries, Essaouira has played a significant role in maritime trade, evolving through various civilizations—from the Portuguese settlers between 1506 and 1510 to the French expeditions of the early 17th century. Today, this UNESCO World Heritage Site offers a peaceful escape filled with culture, history, and seaside charm.
Experience Details:
Your day begins with a scenic drive from Marrakech (or Agadir, if applicable), through the Moroccan countryside and Argan tree groves—keep an eye out for goats climbing the trees! Upon arrival in Essaouira, embark on a guided walking tour of the old city, where the whitewashed walls, narrow alleys, and vibrant souks invite exploration.
Off the beaten path, your guide will introduce you to Essaouira’s lesser-known landmarks, traditional workshops, and unique architecture influenced by Berber, Portuguese, and French design.
After a leisurely lunch by the ocean (optional), enjoy some free time to stroll along the beach, sip mint tea at a seaside café, or shop for locally made crafts before your return journey.
