Your Venture Ashore representative will greet you at the port and guide you to your transport for this fascinating half-day excursion of Paphos. The one-time capital of Cyprus was known through the classical world as the focal point for the worship of Aphrodite, the ancient Goddess of Love & Beauty. On your journey to Paphos, you'll enjoy a brief photo stop at Petra Tou Romiou, a rugged rock near the shore that marks the place where legends say that Aphrodite herself was born.
At Paphos, you'll stop at the Tomb of the Kings, an ancient necropolis carved from solid rock, and included in the UNESCO List of sites of extraordinary cultural heritage. Here, you'll see stairs leading down to sunken courts ringed by peristyles of Doric columns carved from the rock. Beyond the colonnades, passages lead to atmospheric chambers with burial alcoves.
It's just a short transfer to the Archaeological Park, located behind the picturesque fishing harbour of Paphos. Here, you'll come face-to-face with the most spectacular of treasures, discovered accidentally by a ploughing farmer in 1962. These stunning Roman mosaics are considered among the best found in the Eastern Mediterranean and are just part of an extensive set excavated beneath a complex of Roman buildings, depicting dramatic episodes from ancient mythology. The evocative scenes reflect the wealth and opulence of Imperial Rome, and your tour will visit the mosaic complex known as House of Dionysus, named after the presence of the God Dionysus in the scenes depicted.
Before returning to the port, enjoy some free time in the harbour area, with its rich mix of souvenir shops and cafes. An empty Arab fort flanks the harbour which you may want to visit at your leisure for the view from the roof (entrance fees apply).
