Your historic tour begins at the port in Limassol, where you'll be met by your exclusive Venture Ashore representative, who will show you to your transport and answer any questions you may have.
The picturesque village of Lefkara is found on the limestone hill slopes between Limassol and Larnaca, and is renowned throughout the region for its fine local lace (known as "Lefkaritika") and silverware. History records how the women of the village have produced lace here for many centuries which their men folk would travel around Europe to sell. According to local tradition, Leonardo da Vinci visited the village in 1481 and bought a lace altar cloth, which he donated to Milan Cathedral.
Today, when the weather is sunny, the craftswomen turn the streets of the village into open-air workshops as they sit outside to practice their craft. You'll have the chance to watch the artisans create their intricate designs, and buy beautiful lace souvenirs from the village stores.
Then, a short stroll to the Church of the Holy Cross, to view the 18th Century gilt iconostasis and the unique 13th Century silver cross. Enjoy panoramic views of the surrounding countryside from the viewpoint near the church before you leave this fascinating village.
You tour continues at Choirokitia, an unusually well-preserved Neolithic site that is included in the UNESCO World Cultural Heritage List.
Nestling on a hill-slope, the settlement dates from around 6800 BC and was home to as many as two thousand inhabitants at one time - archaeologists have excavated many items at the site including bowls, flints and stone idols. Here, you can see housing foundations, a maze of lanes and a defensive perimeter wall. You will also visit a recreated replica of their distinctive beehive-shaped homes.
