Overview
On departing the port we will drive along the Salento peninsula, home to pretty white washed towns and fields of olive trees, arriving in Lecce the starting point for our walking tour. Lecce is the main city on the Salentine peninsula and is over 2000 years old, steeped in baroque architecture it is commonly nicknamed "The Florence of the South".
We will enter the town through Porta Napoli the main city gate to the ancient city, walking a few yards we will reach The Basilica di Santa Croce - whose baroque façade is as exuberant as its large Renaissance interior is austere. As we continue through the quiet streets of the old town, beneath delicate wrought-iron balustrades, curving white-washed arches and soft amber street lamps we will arrive at the wonderful Piazza del Duomo, the square is completely enclosed on three sides and is home to Duomo of Lecce, the Bell tower, the Bishop's Palace and the Seminary Palace.
The Duomo of Lecce, is the city's cathedral originally built in 1144 and restored in the Baroque style in 1659 by the architect Giuseppe Zimbalo.
The Bishops palace is the current day residence of the Archbishop of Lecce and The Seminary Palace houses the Diocesan Museum of Sacred Art
After our time here we will re-join the coach and head back to the cruise port in plenty of time for your cruise ships departure.
