Overview
We will depart the port and transfer to Matera, one of the most unique, interesting, unusual and memorable destinations in Italy, famous for its extensive cave-dwelling districts, the Sassi, and declared a UNESCO World Heritage site. Matera starred as Jerusalem in Mel Gibson's "The Passion of the Christ" in 2004 and was home to the recent filming of the Bond movie "No Time To Die"
Upon arrival in Matera we will take in the stunning view across the Sassi described as one of the most unique landscapes in Europe. The tour will then continue down through the narrow streets where we will admire pale limestone churches, monasteries, palaces and houses, tiny courtyards adorned with flower pots, all amazingly carved in to the rock and balanced on the edge of a ravine.
The last part of our tour will visit "Casa Grotta" a typical example of the ancient dwellings of Matera, preserved as a museum, complete with fixtures, fittings and model livestock. A fantastic opportunity to see the layout of a once inhabited cave where an entire family (on average six members) including their animals lived.
You will then be taken back to the cruise port in plenty of time for your cruise ships departure.
