Regarded by the ancients as the center of the world, the Sanctuary of Delphi is nestled in the forested slopes and rocky crags of Mount Parnassus. A sacred site since the Bronze Age, legend has it that the shrine, and its famous oracle, was once guarded by the she-dragon Pytho. Pytho was eventually slain by the god Apollo, whose followers appropriated the site in the 8th century B.C. Lying roughly 100 miles northwest of Athens, the complex of buildings includes the Temple of Apollo, home of the famous oracle, the mysterious Corycian Cave, and the Castalian Spring. Your English-speaking driver will explain all of this fascinating history to you!
There's a visit to the Monastery of Osios Loukas, set in the folds of Mt. Helikon, halfway between Athens and Delphi. Here, you'll find the Byzantine monastery of Saint Luke, built in the 11th century. The splendid mosaics and architecture make this monastery one of the most important monuments of Middle Byzantine architecture and art. Drive through this wonderful site, soaking in the history and the scenery.
Next, a wonderful stop at the town of Thebes, famous in Greek mythology and for its role in such legendary stories as the tragedy of King Oedipus. Continue on for a stop in the lively town of Levadia. Enjoy the lovely white houses in the upper part of the town, complete with authentic wooden balconies dating back hundreds of years.
Your last stop will be the mountain village of Arachova, located on the slopes of Parnassus at a height of over 3,000 feet! Wander through the narrow streets lined with taverns and workshops. Taste the local specialty, formaela, a type of soft fried cheese. Arachova is also famous for their handmade carpets, sold in all sorts of wonderful bright colors
