Overview

You will board your comfortable transportation at the cruise pier, ready to discover Corfu!

Your tour starts in Corfu port and from here embark on a scenic drive to the Koum Kouat distillery in Agia Ioannis. The Koum Kouat fruit is a specialty of the island. It is a Chinese fruit brought by the British in the 19th century and looks like a very small orange with a bittersweet flavor. The liqueur is very famous in Corfu because it is said that its the only place in the world you can find it. Here you can taste it for free and as well local extra virgin olive oil, which was the most important product of Corfu for hundreds years and today the island is covered by more than 3 million of olive trees, and some of them are older than 1000 years!

We then depart to visit Kanoni. The cosmopolitan Kanoni is one of the most famous Corfu sights, covers the entire peninsula south of Corfu town. In antiquity there was the ancient city of Corfu founded here in the 8th century BC by Dorians who came from Korinth. It was named so, because of the artillery that had been set up there by the French, during the first French occupation of Corfu Island. Kanoni is a place of breathtaking beauty with a magnificent view to the island with the monastery of Vlacherna and the Mouse Island, Pontikonissi.

You visit the monastery of Vlacherena and from there by small boat (which only takes few minutes) go to Mouse Island. This tiny island is uninhabited today and used to house monastery. Today there is a small chapel here devoted to The Transfiguration of Christ.

If you are fans of Gerald Durrell's book, you may know that on the opposite hill called Perama stayed two of three villas occupied by the Durrell's family during their stay in Corfu. (The strawberry-Pink Villa and The Snow-White Villa. Both are private houses and not open for visitors) Small Gerry played on the coast and visited often monk living in the monastery on Mouse Island.

In Kanoni there is Mon Repos Palace built by Sir Frederick Adam, the British high commissioner of the Ionian Islands. It is a neo-classical building built in 1828. In 1864 when the Ionian Islands united with the rest of Greece, the Mon Repos was given to the Greek Royal family. Prince Philip, the Duke of Edinburgh was born in the villa.

In the park and areas near villa you can see many remains from ancient town. The film makers of series about Durrell's family filmed at Mon Repo few scenes. (They used it as the exterior and the main entrance of the residence of Countess Mavrodaki.) You will have short stop there to explore the park with ancient sites by yourself.

After Kanoni the tour continues to the Old Corfu Town. Your coach will leave you close to the beautiful Old Port. Old Corfu Town is considered to be the Jewel of Corfu Island. It is delimited by the two ancient fortresses, the old one and the new one and it is distinctive deeply by the Venetian element. It is an impressive combination of massive forts, palaces, narrow streets and tall western-style buildings.

The oldest neighborhood of the city is called Kampiello and it is characterized by the narrow streets and tall buildings. Focal point of the old town is the Esplanade Square which is considered the largest square in Greece and it is located opposite the old fort. On the west side of Esplanade is situated the famous Liston. It is the cosmopolitan center of the Old town and you can enjoy a coffee or a drink in one of the many cafes that are situated under the arches.

In the Old town you will also have the chance to do some shopping and visit Saint Spyridon Church, Old Fortress, New Fortress or another famous site. In Corfu Town you will find many places seen in Durrell's series. For example the Palace of St. Michael and St. George was used as a bank where Spiro got into a fight with the Banker and Mrs. Durrell checks if their money arrived. In Esplanade square there is a garden called Durrell's garden with beautiful trees and busts of Gerald and Lawrence Durrell.

From the Old port it is just a short drive to the new port where our tour ends and you board your cruise ship in plenty of time before your cruise ship departs this beautiful island.
