D-Day Normandy Beaches Full Day Tour

Overview

You will be picked up from the port of Le Havre by your Venture Ashore representative and board your transportation ready to take you on this full-day tour.

Leaving Le Havre cruise port behind, settle in for a comfortable drive, journey time is around 2.5-3 hours. Your destination is the Landing Beaches sites, where over 70 years ago the most pivotal battle on the Western Front took place.

You will take a look at some of the most important locations involved within the D-Day Landings of June 1944.
Operation Overlord was the name given to the Allied invasion of Normandy that started on Tuesday 6th June 1944. It included American, Canadian and British troops and took place on the Normandy coastline which was divided into 5 sectors: Utah, Omaha, Gold, Juno, and Sword.

The sites you will visit include:

• Pointe du Hoc This cliff overlooking the English Channel is approx. 100 ft. high, and during WW2 was the highest point between Omaha & Utah Beaches. It was captured by the US Army during the D-Day landings, after the troops scaled the cliffs by using rope ladders, they inserted American flags in order to stop gunfire from their allies.

  Omaha Beach This 8km long stretch of coastline was what linked the American landings at Utah Beach to the British landings at Gold Beach.
• Normandy American Cemetery and Memorial, Coleville-sur-Mer - This Cemetery and Memorial is a tribute and honors the American troops who died during WW2.
• 
  Arromanches Port This is an artificial port, specifically created for the D-Day landings. It was initially installed as a temporary port for the unloading of heavy cargo and equipment. Today the concrete watertight Phoenix breakwater structures remain.

There is also the option to visit the D-Day Museum in Arromanches while on this tour for an additional cost.
