Overview

Start your full day tour with a pick up at your cruise port, where you will board your private transportation, settle in as you leave the port behind!

Avignon is an amazing historical city, still surrounded by impressive walls that cover nearly 3 miles and are punctuated by 39 towers and seven gates!

In fact, with the arrival of the popes in the 14th Century, the city became a second Rome. The huge pope’s palace is still standing and is even the biggest gothic palace in the world. Just being at the foot of the impressive building gives an idea of the grand life under the seven French popes who built a miniature Vatican during their rule here. But there is much more to see, within the walls thrives a culturally rich city. Your guide will lead you through the ancient town, which is full of life, but you will also have time, if you want, to wander on your own in the bustling area.

The second point of interest is the legendary broken bridge of Avignon. It became famous throughout the world due to the beloved children's song. First built in the late 1100's, it was often rebuilt after damage inflicted by the raging flood waters of the Rhône River.

After a lunch on your own, fortified with some French delicacies, you will head towards the most famous and lush area for wines in France. Châteauneuf du Pape is the most important wine appellation in the southern Rhône, with more than 3,200 hectares of vineyards and over 320 growers. The gloriously rich red wines, redolent of the heat and herbs of the south, are enhanced by the complexity which comes from blending several of the 14 permitted grape varieties including Grenache, Mourvèdre and Syrah.

During your visit to a Châteauneuf domain, you will then learn about the local wines and their great variety while tasting them.

At the end of your memorable tour, you will board your transportation for your return to your cruise ship.
