Overview

From the old port of Mykonos you will board one of the local ferries to transport you to Delos, the island of light. According to Greek Mythology, Delos is the birthplace of the God Apollo and the Goddess Artemis. Its name means "that which appears" and legend has it that the island appeared amid the waves so that Leto would have a place to give birth to Apollo and Artemis.

Delos Island, an area of only two square miles, was once a very important religious, cultural, and commercial center. Located in the middle of the Cyclades island group, Delos was perfectly positioned to become an important trade center in the Mediterranean.

Today, the island is uninhabited, but a very important site was revealed in the early 19th century which is comprised of ancient ruins, artifacts, fallen columns, statues, sections of the famous mosaics (which adorned the houses of the rich), a stadium, and tiers of seats from a theatre. Among these ruins, five marble lions in a row still stand. These were the guardians of the sacred lake, still gazing out to the east, waiting for the sun to rise. Other interesting monuments, spread over a wide area, are the Agora, the treasuries of the various cities, the Sanctuary of Apollo, the Theatre, the Sanctuary of the Foreign Gods, and the Sacred Mt. Cynthus.

The island of Delos was once a hub of activity and an important site of religious significance. As Delos was the birthplace of Apollo, people came from around the world to this ancient site to pay homage to the God of music, beauty, and light.

Leaving the sacred island of Delos, you will re-board the local ferry to return to Mykonos.

Special Instructions

The site of Delos will be explored on foot. Be prepared for 2 hours of extensive walking. Guests must be able to walk for approximately 3/4 miles over narrow cobble-stoned streets that are uneven in some places and have also few steps.
There is limited shade at the site. Wear cool and comfortable clothes and comfortable walking shoes.
Bring your sunscreen, sunglasses, sunhat and water bottle.
There is a coffee place serving cold drinks and toilets/restrooms are available about 300 meters from the tender spot at Delos.
This tour does not include a private vehicle. Your guide will meet you when you disembark your cruise ship and will ride with you on the shuttle between the ship and the ferry to Delos.
This tour is not suitable for wheelchair users or motorized scooters or guests with mobility issues.
The archaeological museum of Delos remains closed due to renovation works.
