Overview
Ponta Delgada is the largest city in the Portuguese Azores. The city is located on Sao Miguel Island and contains many wonderful historic, natural and cultural sites of interest.
This tour takes you on a wonderful journey to the impressive Twin Lakes area of the island. You will start your tour at the beautiful Empadas Lake. The lake is large and you will have plenty of time to explore the surroundings and take some wonderful photographs before continuing by road to the top rim of the Twin Lakes.
You will stop at the highest point – the belvedere of Vista de Rei where the blue and green Twin Lakes can be observed from the best vantage point on the island. The huge volcanic craters are truly breathtaking and your guide will tell you about the interesting history and importance of the lakes and their role in the beauty of the island. The location is known as Kings View in English as it is said the view is fit for a king.
Your tour will continue into the Sete Cidades or “seven cities” surrounded by lush green meadows and vast lakes. Located in the west of the island it is the least populated parish on the island and is highly protected by various laws meaning the spectacular views will never be spoilt. The main highlight of the area is the polygenetic volcano known as Sete Cidades Massif. There are also a number of other volcanic craters and beautiful valleys. Your guide will escort you through all of the major highlights and you will have plenty of time to take photographs to remember this fantastic day. You will finally stop at the beautiful Santiago Lake which is famous for its surrounding Japanese Cedar and Laurel forest.
You will then continue back across the bridge between the Twin Lakes and the surrounding crater wall to visit the center of the Seven Cities village. Famous for its white colored houses, neatly decorated flowered yards and streets. There is a small school, a beautiful church and a village square to see and the local people are incredibly welcoming. The village is surrounded by fields and grasslands with farming being the main source of income. In the west of the village is an area of open parklands where a tunnel has been created to link the crater to your final stop- the village of Moisteiros.
Moisteiros is a relatively new village on the island having only been settled in since 1480. The town has a large maritime connection with fishing being its main source of income. From the top of the hills surrounding the town you can get an amazing view over the town and out to sea.
The Azores are some of the most beautiful, scenic islands in the world and if you have the chance to visit them during your cruise this tour is a must. Not only will you learn of the amazing history of the islands, you will be able to take some amazing photographs and make memories to last a lifetime.
