Unlike its more famous neighbor Pompeii, Herculaneum was a wealthy seaside resort in ancient times, known for its elegant villas and elite residents. When Mount Vesuvius erupted in 79 AD, Herculaneum was buried not in ash, but under a torrent of volcanic mud—a unique event that led to remarkable preservation of the site.
