Overview
Discover the rich artistic heritage of Estonia on this unique journey through Tallinn’s most iconic museums, where medieval masterpieces meet cutting-edge modern art.
Your tour begins in Lower Town, where a short walk brings you to St. Nicholas' Church Museum (Niguliste Museum), one of the most important repositories of ecclesiastical art in the country. Housed in a beautifully preserved Gothic church, this museum presents Estonia’s most extensive collection of religious art from the Medieval and Early Modern periods.
As you explore, you’ll encounter treasures dating back to the 13th century, including ornate Baroque chandeliers, intricately carved 15th-century altarpieces, and the shimmering Silver Chamber. The highlight, however, is Berndt Notke’s haunting Dance of Death (Danse Macabre) a powerful 15th-century masterpiece that offers a rare glimpse into medieval views on mortality and faith.
From the echoes of Gothic vaults, you’ll next travel to the KUMU Art Museum, located just beyond Tallinn’s ancient city walls. In striking contrast to your first stop, KUMU is a sleek, contemporary structure nestled in a serene park setting. Opened in 2006, it houses over 60,000 works, making it the largest art collection in the Baltic region.
Inside, you’ll find a wide range of works from classical Estonian art to avant-garde contemporary pieces, along with exhibits by foreign artists. Your expert guide—well-versed in both venues, will provide rich context and insight into the evolution of Estonian art and the national identity it reflects.
This tour offers a unique dialogue between past and present, where medieval religious iconography meets modern artistic expression, all in the heart of Estonia's captivating capital.
