Overview

This combined driving and walking tour is an excellent way to get acquainted with the best sites of Tallinn, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and a wonderfully preserved city of the Hanseatic League.

Our journey begins in the New Tallinn area, where there is much to see outside the walls. Passing residential neighborhoods, you'll be surprised by their similarity to American neighborhoods.

Upon arrival in Kadriorg Park, we'll visit Kadriorg Palace, a magnificent northern baroque palace, which Russian czar Peter the Great had built for his wife, Catherine I, in 1718. Housed within the palace is the Kadriorg Art Museum. Displayed here are hundreds of 16th-20th century paintings by Western and Russian artists, as well as prints, sculptures, and other works.

We'll pass by Peter the Great's cottage, which he preferred to the palace, as well as the new Art Museum of Estonia, a striking, contemporary design that is tucked into the hillside.

As we move through the medieval gates into the past, we'll circle around the Old Town, admiring the magnificent views of the medieval city walls. Our guided walking tour begins in the Upper Town with its watch towers, graceful spires, and winding, cobbled streets. We'll visit the Russian Orthodox Church, inaugurated in 1900, and the 13th century Gothic-style Dome Cathedral, while also marveling at the exterior of Toompea Castle, the impressive structure that is the seat of Estonia's parliament. Built on a cliff top, the Upper Town provides a superb vantage point from which to view the red-gabled roofs and spires of the Lower Town.

Our tour continues as we follow our guide down Long and Short Leg Streets to the Lower Town. Among the highlights here are the apothecary, which opened in 1422, the Great Guild House, Holy Ghost Church, and the 15th century Gothic Town Hall (all of which we'll view from the outside). On the grounds of the Dominican Convent is a colorful market--St. Catherine's Arts and Crafts Center--that is not to be missed.

At this time, you may decide to walk the old streets, grab some lunch, or do some shopping. There is something special about this medieval city, so we recommend doing some exploring on your own here. If you prefer to head back to the ship, your choice is a healthy walk or grabbing a taxi for about €7 per person.
