Overview

Meteora is one of the most imposing sights in mainland Greece with it's giant rocks in bizarre shapes, ranging in height from 100 to 150 meters. Whether you are arriving by ship or staying in the area this is the perfect tour. Your guide will meet you either at your cruise port or hotel, ready to leave the port of Volos and head Northwest crossing the agricultural plain of Thessaly.

Passing provincial towns such as Larissa and Trikala before you reach Kalambaka which is built at the footsteps of Meteora rocks. A short restroom stop with refreshments will take place here before you continue to the extraordinary "monasteries in the air" of the Meteora.

Once a monastic community with 24 monasteries, Meteora now consists of only five active ones. They were first built in the 14th century by monks who searched for a place where they could be isolated and pray undisturbed from the rest of the world. Until 1920 most of the Meteora monasteries could only be reached by getting into a net and hauled up by a rope. Fortunately, steps were cut afterward to all of the monasteries.

You will visit two of the most beautiful and representative Monasteries of the valley where you will admire superb icons, unique mosaics, and frescoes, old manuscripts, exceptional domed roofs as well as breathtaking views of the other monasteries and the surrounding area.

After your visit to the monasteries, you will arrive at a local restaurant in the area of Kalambaka for lunch.

After your delicious lunch, your return journey takes you back via the same road, passing Trikala and Larrisa, and you will return to the port of Volos.

This tour is not suitable for, wheelchair users or motorized scooters or guests with walking difficulties

Special Instructions

Dress for the weather and wear comfortable walking shoes. There is extensive walking involved in this tour. There are many steps at the Meteora Monasteries.
Appropriate clothing is required for the visit to the monasteries. Gentleman should wear long trousers and women in skirts. Shorts are not permitted and women cannot wear trousers. The dress code is required.
Groups of 2 guests will be transported in a pre-booked Mercedes taxi. While the vehicles are used primarily for private tours and transfer services, it is the law for the meter to be on and for the vehicle to have a taxi sign on top. You will not be expected to pay the meter.
Bring sun cream, a sun hat, sunglasses and bottled water with you, as at times it can get extremely hot.
